Scotch Malt Whisky Society distillery numbers
I aim to make this a thorough list of distillery numbers. There are dozens of other lists out there, but frequently they're incomplete. If you have a correction, please send it to me!
Why does the SMWS only identify scotches by number? That's a part of their agreement with each distillery - they agree to not overtly identify the source distillery (though their descriptions give very strong hints at who it is). At least this is what they say - you can go to the SMWS UK's website and get lists of bottles by distillery name. Perhaps the number system was an old agreement that has since changed, who knows. The general story is that distillers don't want their brands tied to the SMWS releases because the SMWS release may not be characteristic of that brand's normal taste profiles. You shouldn't expect a Lagavulin from SMWS to taste like the Lagavulin you get at your local liquor store, and vice versa.
What do the numbers mean? 5.19 means that the bottle is from the 19th cask from distillery 5. In this case, it would be from Auchentoshan.
Why can't I find X in the SMWS' current catalog? The SMWS doesn't have offerings from every distillery available all the time. Some of the distilleries listed may never see the light of day in the SMWS catalog again. And if you're in the US, the US SMWS affiliate has a much, much more limited selection than the UK does. This is just a guide to what the numbers are, not what you can order at any time.
Are you affiliated with the SMWS? No. I put this together without any direct help from the SMWS. They can't be held responsible for any of the information I have listed here. There may also be mistakes in here - please let me know if you find any.
