Symptoms

Your Tivo won't load new programming information. It can connect to Tivo and download the data just fine, but when it tries to process it locally, it fails with an S03 error. Your programming data may be expired (or may be about to expire).

The Problem

It's either one of two things (both are disk related)- the data you're downloading is getting corrupted on the disk, or there are other disk problems that cause data loading to fail.

The Risks

Attempting these steps may cause the loss of your settings or programming. It may make your Tivo completely unusable. You Have Been Warned.

Troubleshooting

Step One: Kickstart

Tivo support staff call this procedure a "kickstart". I presume what it does is reboot the Tivo's Linux operating system into single user mode and does a filesystem check and repair, but I'm just guessing. This is the first thing to try.

  • Shut down the Tivo. Some suggest unplugging it for ten or so seconds.
  • When you plug it back in, hold down the "Pause" button on your remote. Keep it down until you see yellow indicator lights on the front of the Tivo.
  • Release the Pause button and press 57. The Tivo should reboot a few seconds after this.
  • The Tivo will get well into its bootup procedure and then go to a green screen that says "A serious error has occurred". This is where it checks and repairs the disk. It can take a while. When this is finished, the Tivo will reboot again normally.

If the Tivo doesn't reboot normally - if you end up in an endless cycle of rebooting to green screens, you have a fatal disk problem. See the bottom of this page for some options.

Step Two: Delete suggestions

The menu titles may be different on your Tivo, but you should be able to figure out which ones I'm talking about. This step WILL delete all of your thumbs up/down ratings. You won't get any new programming suggestions until you rate programs from scratch.

  • Go to the "Messages and Settings" menu item.
  • Go to the "Reset or Restart Tivo" menu item.
  • Choose "Clear Thumb Ratings and Suggestions" menu item.
  • Do what it says (three thumbs down and enter)
  • The Tivo will reboot.
  • Try to manually connect again.

Step Three: Wipeout

This step WILL delete all programming on your Tivo. You'll end up with a blank slate. You've been warned.

  • Go to the "Messages and Settings" menu item.
  • Go to the "Reset or Restart Tivo" menu item.
  • Choose "Clear Everything"
